Inspiring Stories is building a movement of young New Zealanders who can, and will change the world. You can be part of it.
Why do you exist?
From climate change to inequality, mental health to unemployment – we live in a world with urgent a complex problems that need solving. Too many young people feel overwhelmed by the issues, don’t feel optimistic about their future, or like their efforts can make a difference. This is having devastating impacts on society, and we have to change this!
What do you do?
We work with a diverse range of young New Zealanders to explore big issues that affect their future, to build their entrepreneurship and leadership capability, and their ideas to make a difference. Our two flagship programmes are Festival for the Future, and Future Leaders.
The Future Leaders programme started in 2016 with a simple question – “How might we make a bigger difference for young people in rural and provincial New Zealand?” The programme has evolved significantly each year, from a small pilot with just 16 young people involved, to more than 200 young people across eight communities in 2018. The programme runs in Kawerau, Ōpōtiki, Whakatāne, the Far North, Whangarei, Kāpiti Coast, Palmerston North and Greymouth.
While Future Leaders is an inclusive and open programme, more than 70% of participants identify as female, and 50% identify as Māori. The programme is changing lives, especially for young women, and is helping to advance gender equality and the economic empowerment for a diverse range of young people in some of New Zealand's most marginalised communities.
Festival for the Future, is a remarkable national event packed with inspiring speakers, panel discussions, workshops, and a marketplace for great ideas. The annual Festival is hosted in Wellington and attracts 1,200+ attendees, with people from every region nationwide.
Since 2011, more than 8,000 people have taken part in our programmes. From leading volunteer movements to advocating for gender equality; working to cure treatable blindness to building social enterprises and technology companies. Our alumni have won awards and represented New Zealand on the world stage. We're just getting started!
How can we help?
With your support, we can make a difference for thousands of young New Zealanders, their communities and our nation.
To run the Future Leaders programme in places like Kaikohe, Kawerau and Opotiki costs more than $50,000 per chapter. Generosity and support plays a critical role in ensuring that this remains an accessible and free programme for the young people who can benefit most, with two tiers of involvement that young people can choose from. Young people participating in the more intensive layer as a 'Catalyst' is the equivalent of a $5,000 scholarship; or in the lighter-touch option which includes full scholarship to attend Festival for the Future is the equivalent of a $1,000 per person.
At the end of the day, every little bit helps. We'd also encourage you to come see our work first hand – join us at Festival for the Future, come and meet some of our Future Leaders, and become a champion!
