From humble beginnings, Tim Alpe and his brother Dan launched the now ubiquitous Jucy Rentals out of a tiny office on The Strand in Parnell with a fleet of 35 cars. Today, JUCY is one of Australasia’s leading and fastest growing independent tourism brands. For someone who left school a little unsure about what he wanted to do with his life, Tim quickly grasped the concept of smart business and never looked back. His dedication and determination is reflected in the core values of the company: Fun, Family, Pride and Passion. We asked Tim to tell us more about what inspires him.
What’s happening in the world of Tim Alpe this year?
2013 is becoming another amazing year for me and JUCY. We are into our second season in the US and are seeing the JUCY product being really well received by the Americans. We have a lot of new projects on the go this year including a very exciting Hotel concept we are trying to get off the ground in Christchurch. I have also managed to spend a few holidays with the family this year, which has been amazing. Life is great. Thanks for asking.
Describe the most generous person you know and how they have influenced you.
I would have to say my Mum. Not only is she incredibly generous with her time to my family but she does a lot in the community to improve the lives of others through involvement in various charities. Mum has shown me that there are huge benefits when you pay it forward. As a community we will only excel if we are helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves. This is true in all aspects of our lives and something that Mum has shown me.
Name an everyday action that makes the world a better place, yet is underrated.
This is going to sound strange but one thing that I think is underrated is when people let other people into traffic while driving. This small gesture goes a long way and is the best example ever of “paying it forward”. Try it and see what happens. If you let someone into traffic, I guarantee that they will do the same to another person trying to get in.
Tell us three things that inspire you and why.
I am inspired by amazing true stories. I have recently read (ok listened on an audio book) the tennis player Jimmy Connor’s autobiography called The Outsider . It is an amazing story of someone who came from humble beginnings to be the best tennis player in the world.
I tend to like business stories as well and think my favourite is the In-N-Out burger chain story. This is about an American burger chain that grew from one hole in the wall place to be the most successful privately owned fast food company in the world. What is great about this story is that the owners never once strayed from their original plans, which were to bring fresh burgers to Americans. The menu has four items on it and they have no freezers, which means all food is always fresh. In-N-Out is a perfect example of KISS (Keep it Simple) and look after the customer.
